-Kathleen-

When I was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis as an adolescent in the 1990s, I was told there was "no role" for physical therapy in my treatment plan. I was braced and had no significant progression of my curve. However, as an adult, my curve worsened and I had no tools or techniques to help it. I felt there had to be something between "doing nothing" and "surgery". When I started working with Kathleen at PTOnsite, I had finally found that "thing". Kathleen's care and the Rigo-Schroth method of physical therapy has been life-changing for me. On my first visit with Kathleen, I learned more about my specific curve and spine and how it was affecting the rest of my body than anyone had investigated or explained before. In the year that I have been working with Kathleen, my back, pain and curve itself have improved immensely. She tailored her approach to include soft tissue work to address areas of inflammation and spasm, and also specific detailed exercises to strengthen muscle imbalances. I have a daily regimen of exercises that has lessened pain, drastically reduced the amount of medications I need, and I have been able to increase exercise and family activities significantly. Kathleen and her use of the Rigo-Schroth method for scoliosis has improved my quality of life. I only wish I had known about it and started with her sooner. - Emily

After researching the best treatment for scoliosis, I was amazed to find Kate, a Rigo Schroth trained therapist, right in our area! Our doctor at Boston Children’s Hospital confirmed that this was a worthwhile therapy to use along with bracing. My child enjoys working with Kate and x-rays showed an improvement within months! Kate’s compassion and knowledge helped us shift from an overwhelmed state into being empowered with a game plan to move us forward. I highly recommend reaching out to PT Onsite! - Kirsten

What is PSSE

PSSE is an acronym for Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises. PSSE are a group of scientifically supported scoliosis specific exercise originated by the Scientific Society of Scoliosis Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Treatment (SOSORT). All PSSE exercises must meet the following criteria*:

An exercise type must meet the following requirements in order to be an accepted PSSE by SOSORT:

  • Autocorrection in 3D.The patient learns how to perform the corrected posture themselves.

  • Training in activities of daily living. The patient knows how to correctly posture during normal movement patterns in their life activities.

  • Stabilization in corrected position. The patient performs exercises to stabilize the corrected posture both in the clinic and at home.

  • Education. The patient and family are educated about scoliosis and what PSSE aims to support.
